BALERNO BOWLING CLUB
The 24hour Charity Bowlathon, mentioned in last months report,
duly took place at the Club on the 25th - 26th August. The event
was organised by two past Club Champions, Grant Wilson and Ross
Young to raise money jointly for the Special Care Baby Unit at
St.John’s Hospital and the National Kidney Unit.
The Bowlathon was weeks in the planning and there was a buzz of
excitement in the Club at the 1pm start. The game itself was,
perhaps, always in the favour of team Wilson but a final score
of 222 to Grant and 218 to Ross, after 24 hours continuous bowling,
shows how close it was.
The whole event can be judged a massive success with great support
from the Club members, their families and their friends.
Donations are still being collated but the final figure raised
is likely to be in the region of £3,500, well above expectations.
The club house was a busy place right though the night with the
Barbeque proving very popular as was the seranading by Frank Millan
when he paused from his catering duties. Norma Barclay and the
rest of the Bar Staff deserve special mention for their efforts
in selling tickets between pulling pints and the event could not
have taken place had Jimmy Watson not erected the lights.
The raffle finished off the whole event with 63 prizes on offer
!
Grant & Ross would like to thank everyone involved including
a whole host of sponsors. Bavelaw Garage for the donation of burgers
and Mark McGill, Butchers of Currie for his donation of breakfast
food. In addition, Adam Tandoori, Papa Crolla, Tony Harper, CJ's
Chinese Takeaway, Asda of Chesser, Balerno Garage , Prams &
Co, Megabowl and Cineworld both Fountain Park, Foodylicious, Stiles,
Auto Image, Browns of George Street, The Shore Bar & Restaurant,
Harburn Golf Club, Hibernian Football Club, Marriott Dalmahoy
Leisure Club, Claire Baigrie, Tam Murray, Derrick Robb and Frances
Young for their kind donations of raffle prizes.
Grant and Ross would like to run this event again next year. So,
watch the Club notice board, get your name up early and lets see
if we can surpass this years total.
As the season draws to an end, we must remember that although
the agreement reached with the Rosebery Estate was acceptable,
the increased rent is still a heavy burden. The Club needs everyones
support through the winter if we are to meet our commitments.
