BALERNO BOWLING CLUB
The Green will open on Saturday, 21st April, weather permitting.
It looks glorious.
When Tom Murray took it over he said that it would probably take
about 5 years to get the best out of it. He has been true to his
word. It is very lush due to the mild winter. So much so that it
is unlikely that a cut at this time of year has yielded so much
grass. Tom and his helpers have done such a great job that it is
easy to forget what Green care went before. It was not exactly neglected.
Many pounds were spent and much advice was taken but still we had
problems that our members were quick to point out. It is a fact
that more nonsense is spoken about Greens than anything else in
a bowling club. Every member is an expert. Laurie McMorran never
said a truer word than “If someone complains about the Green,
first ask whether they won or lost.”
However, in fairness, some complaints were justified but are now,
hopefully, a thing of the past.
The Club Bowling Meeting will be held on Friday, 23rd March at 7.30pm
in the downstairs lounge. Traditionally, this is poorly attended.
Perhaps, now that it has been moved to a Friday evening, this will
change. It is a mistake to think that this meeting is purely concerned
with picking the players to represent the Club in competitions.
Any aspect of bowling can and is discussed. For example, in recent
seasons, rule changes have been explained. Even if your bowling
interest is primarily recreational, rather than competitive, do
go along. Your opinion is worth hearing.
The Seniors Annual General Meeting will be held in the upstairs
lounge on Friday,30th March at 2.30pm. The later start is to accomodate
those playing Indoors. In contrast, this is usually well attended
and all the better for it. Some illustrous names now qualify for
membership of the Seniors. Billy Davidson and Paddy Welch to name
but two. They don’t look a day older than when I first saw
them leaping around the dance floor some twenty years ago. Now both
are Grandfathers and move slightly more slowly and stiffly in the
morning but they are a very welcome addition.
Finally, many congatulations to our near neighbours, Currie Rugby
Club, on winning the Premier Championship. A magnificent achievement.
Well done!
