Balerno Bowling Club
Such is the perversity of Scottish summers that some of their best sunshine is always kept for the days immediately after the Green closes. This year was no exception. What a pity that Club Committees do not have the courage to delay closing until mid October rather than pandering to the lemming like rush to get Indoors.
Having rightly given prominence to the Club Champions, Maxie Baigrie and Doris Kergan last month, let us now salute the Seniors Champion, John Miller. Having finished Runner Up in the Championship, Duff Cup and the Computer Pairs, where he played with Brian Ronald and beat Ron Duguid and Eddie Wells, this win completed a succesful season. Nice to see Paddy Welsh finishing Runner Up. Few men have won both the Club and Senior titles. Paddy could do it.
Staying with the Seniors, David Henry and Robin Murdoch defied most forecasts to beat Alan Rankin and Simon Mackay in the 4 bowl pairs. The pairing of Alan and Simon had a combined age of 166 years! Surely a Club record.
In the 2 bowl Pairs Bill Stark and Duncan Clark beat Ron Duguid and Adam Oliver. The Triples were won by Hamish McNeil, Bobby Marshall and David Lees. David Henry, Alan Gray and Dennis Rogers were Runners up.
In the Club competitions, Alan Nichols and Fergie McBeath won the 4 bowl Pairs beating David McNeill and, playing with Fergie McBeath and Robert Douglas, the Triples by beating Derek Robb, Jim Begg and Ross Young.
David McNeill took consolation by winning the Handicap against Ross Young and the 4 bowl Pairs when, partnering Hamish McNeill, they beat Derek Robb and Jim Begg. However, playing with son Dean, he had to be content with the Runners Up spot in the 2 bowl Pairs losing to Fergie McBeath and Alan Nichols.
The 2 bowl singles was won by Kenny Girdler and the Rink by Derek Robb, Maxie Baigrie,Grant Wilson and Ross Young. Ronnie Forfar, George O’Reilly, Bill Stark and Brian Ronald were Runners Up.
The Mixed Pairs were won by Liz and Dennis Rogers who beat Paddy Welsh and Elspeth Oliver.
The Ladies’ results will come next month.
Meanwhile, it is worth noting that, having scooped the pool last year only to lose the Championship final, this year the Rink was the only other success for Maxie Baigrie.
Such is the dedication of a Champion!
