Report on the Men’s Championship by a Roving Reporter
In a pulsating Men’s Championship Final that swung from one player to the other Maxie Baigrie won his 2nd title at the expense of Stevie Watson in his first final appearance. Played on a dry but gusty day, Maxie started off the better and earned an early 5 – 1 lead. Undaunted, Stevie bounced back in fine style and sailed into a 13 – 8 lead. But back came Maxie to peel at 13, 14 and 15 each before making space at 20 – 17. Then came what turned out to be a most unusual last end. With Maxie lying 2 close shots for game he nudged the jack with his third bowl and gave Stevie a chance to power down one of his tremendous drives. Stevie didn’t disappoint and hit the jack into the banking. Unfortunately for him, it was hit so hard it bounced two yards back up the green to Maxie’s bowls and he couldn’t repeat the feat with his last bowl. A great final, played in superb spirit and sportsmanship and surely, Stevie will gain the title very soon.
We all hope he can as Maxie has turned into a grumpy wee [insert your own description] at times. He is also getting on a bit and not too far from his bus pass which might put a smile on his girning coupon at last, the wee *~^#er. The best player of the three on the green during the final was Charlie Husband. He could have wiped the floor with both of them easily. He just needs to get a decent draw and get past the early rounds. Then everyone will see what he can do. Any road up he’ll show them all next year, that’s for sure!
